The least of these

We’ve just returned from an 8 day trip to Nicaragua, and I’m finding it difficult to put  into words how much this trip has impacted our lives.  In addition to my husband teaching at 3 different churches, we had the opportunity to interact with children in 5 different communities by distributing school shoes and toothbrushes and serving them lunch through the Feed the Hungry program.

At most of the outreaches I was in “get ‘er done” mode: greet the children, sing songs, help teach the Bible verse, hand out candy to the game participants, serve the food, sanitize my hands, and done.

The last location we visited was an 1 1/2 hour drive from Rivas, accessible only by 4×4 truck.

While we were serving the children lunch, the scripture from Matthew 25 came to my mind, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink…”

The words of Jesus became incredibly real to me in that moment and I started crying at the humbling realization that in this simple act of serving a child lunch, I was being Jesus’ hands and feet, and communicating to these children that God sees them, loves them, and has a plan for their lives.

The bigger reality is that I don’t have to travel to another nation to be Jesus’ hands and feet.  There are people all around me that need to know God sees them, He loves them, and He has a plan for their lives, I just have to pause from my busyness and look around me as I go about my day to day activities.  Will you join me?
